News in Brief The Diocesan Commission for Occult and Satanism cautions against Halloween partiesThe Diocesan Commission for Occult and Satanism issued a statement advising whoever takes their Catholic faith seriously not to celebrate Halloween, because although this feast is often celebrated neutrally, it actually has strong ties with superstition and other traditions related to spiritism and occult in the wider sense, and may be a sign of “welcome” to a culture of neo-paganism which is already very common in nowadays. On the 1st November, Catholics are encouraged to celebrate the feast of All the Saints, while on the 2nd November, through Christ we pray for all deceased, through whom we receive many graces. These two occasions help us celebrate our faith based on the lives of saints, in relation with Jesus Christ. Lecture on the ethics of the Human EmbryoOn the occasion on the 10th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, the Diocesan Commission for the Family will be organising a lecture on, The biological status of the human embryo. The lecture will be given by Prof Lopez Barahona, who is dean of Biosciences at Fransisco de Vitoria, Madrid, Spain. It will be held on Monday, 24th October, 2005, at The Convent of Sacred Heart, St Julian’s’ at 7pm.
